Ecotoxicological risk assessment of contaminants of emerging concern identified by “suspect screening” from urban wastewater treatment plant effluents at a territorial scale

چکیده

Urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are a major vector of highly ecotoxic contaminants emerging concern (CECs) for urban and sub-urban streams. Ecotoxicological risk assessments (ERAs) provide essential information to public environmental authorities. Nevertheless, ERAs mainly performed at very local scale (one or few WWTPs) on pre-selected list CECs. To cope with these limits, the present study aims develop territorial-scale ERA CECs previously identified by “suspect screening” analytical approach (LC-QToF-MS) quantified in effluents 10 WWTPs urbanized territory during three periods year. Among CECs, this work focused pharmaceutical residue pesticides. was conducted following two complementary methods: (1) single substance approach, based calculation each CEC quotients (RQs) ratio Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) No Effect (PNEC), (2) mixture assessment (“cocktail effect”) concentration addition model (CA), summing individual RQs. Chemical results led an 41 (37 pharmaceuticals 4 pesticides) detected treated effluents. Single 19 implicated least one significant streams, risks DEET, diclofenac, lidocaine, atenolol, terbutryn, atorvastatin, methocarbamol, venlafaxine (RQs reaching 39.84, 62.10, 125.58, 179.11, 348.24, 509.27, 1509.71 3097.37, respectively). Mixture allowed identification (RQmix > 1) 9 studied. It also remarked that leading individually negligible could imply mixture. Finally, territorial showed diversity situations, highest concerns 3 WWTPs: 2 biggest discharging into large French river, Rhône, smallest WWTP releases small intermittent stream.

Contaminants of Emerging Concern

Contaminants of emerging concern, or CECs, can be broadly defined as chemicals that have been recently detected in the environment and that may pose public health or ecological risks. CECs encompass a wide variety of chemicals, including pharmaceuticals and household chemicals. Many CECs differ from conventional environmental contaminants such as pesticides, metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (P...

Screening and Identification of Emerging Contaminants in Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents Using UHPLC/Q-TOF MS and an Accurate Mass Database and Library

This application note describes the creation of an accurate mass library for relevant environmental contaminants and its application for the screening of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, their metabolites, and transformation products in effluents of municipal waste water treatment plants (WWTPs). An Agilent 1290 Infinity LC System coupled to an Agilent 6550 iFunnel Q-TOF ...

Capability of microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems to remove emerging organic contaminants: a pilot-scale study.

The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and seasonality on the removal efficiency of 26 organic microcontaminants from urban wastewater was studied in two pilot high-rate algal ponds (HRAPs). The targeted compounds included pharmaceuticals and personal care products, fire retardants, surfactants, anticorrosive agents, pesticides and plasticizers, among others. The pilot plant, which was fe...

Toxicity Evaluation of Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents Using Daphnia magna

Toxicity evaluation is an important parameter in wastewater quality monitoring as it provides the complete response of test organisms to all compounds in wastewater. The water flea Daphnia magna straus is the most commonly used zooplankton in toxicological tests. The objective of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of effluents from different units of Isfahan Wastewater Treatment Plan...
